MAVLink Security Hardening Guide for Production Deployments

MAVLink is an open communication protocol designed for lightweight, low-latency communication between drones and ground stations. By default, MAVLink communication is unencrypted and unauthenticated. What to be Risk Confidentiality: If MAVLink signing is not enabled, all communications are transmitted in plaintext. Integrity: If signing is not enabled, attackers can modify messages. Availability: Attackers can inject forged messages, causing abnormal drone behavior (such as hovering, landing, or even crashing). Conclusion: If signing is not enabled, attackers can intercept, modify, or inject messages. Impact/Scope All standard MAVLink capabilities require a ground control station. This means any drone system using the MAVLink protocol for communication (especially those with signing disabled in default configurations) is affected. Specific risks include: message eavesdropping (plaintext), message tampering, and injection of forged messages leading to loss of drone control. Remediation/Hardening 1. Enable Message Signing Connect the vehicle to the network. Use the protocol. Enable signing in MAVLink 2.0 (using ). Share keys between the vehicle and ground station. Ensure all messages are signed. 2. Secure Physical Access Password-protect the ground station. Use encrypted connections (such as SSH) to access the ground station. 3. Secure Network Links Protect Wi-Fi using encrypted connections (such as WPA2/WPA3). Protect communication between the ground station and vehicle using encrypted connections (such as TLS). Use firewalls to restrict access. 4. Understand the Limitations Message signing provides authentication and integrity, but not confidentiality. Message signing does not protect MAVLink 1.0 messages. Message signing does not protect MAVLink 2.0 messages.
